The method of preparation for this program varies in the different Dioceses. However, at the Holy Family Cathedral the preparation program is for 8 months for children ages 7-8 years of age. When registering a child for this program, the child’s baptismal certificate must be provided. Parents and children are expected to attend mass regularly.

For Children who will be preparing to receive the Sacrament of Penance and First Holy Communion, weekly classes are held and course work assigned which feature beautifully illustrated Scripture stories to help introduce the children to the Eucharist in the context of the Mass. This is done to motivate them to build a firm foundation for their initiation into these two sacraments.

Communion may be received under the following terms:

  • Baptized Catholics who follow the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the precepts of the church.
  • Catholics who attend Mass regularly (barring sickness) and has received the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once per year.
  • Catholics who are married according to the laws of the Catholic Church.
